Corfu , also called Kerkyra is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and, including its small satellite islands, forms the most of the north western frontier of Greece.

Ancient Kerkyra took part in the Battle of Syvota which was a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War, which was the largest battle between Greek cities at that time. Some ruins of the old city have been found.
